About

Creative urges come in surges from the heart and tickling images in my head. They nag at me softly and consistently through the busy-ness of ordinary life until my hands listen. Then the cycle begins again.

I come from a family of creative beings - painters, quilters, authors, potters, poets, musicians, gardeners, boat builders and architects. I come from a family who amidst the clockwork and practicality of a head strong society finds spaces to tend to their creative urges. Even within the ebb and flow of navigating hardship, creativity has been unquestionably, almost unknowingly passed through generations.

The artworks I create are a meeting of my relationship with the earth and an honouring of something ancient. Cloth is ancient - one of humans’ first technologies. As with most technologies, cloth has been interfered with to the point that what was once a practical solution to the the needs of civilisation has now become a hazardous waste. SING.TO.THE.SEA endeavours to restore beauty in its natural form using natural fibres, botanical dyes, rocks, shells, crystals and shapes that offer the memory that we are of this earth. The rhythm and repetition of slow stitch offers a strength that is only found in patience and a pace that defies the instant gratification of this modern life.

I AM ROSALIE UROSEVIC: THE ARTIST AND FOUNDER OF SING.TO.THE.SEA. LIVING AND CREATING ON NGUNNAWAL AND NGAMBRI LAND IN AUSTRALIA.
